Q&A

Ski season vs a job
Posted by Sophie Thomas
After many failed attempts to gain an interview during my final year at Aston studying Marketing, I decided to do a ski season and take a year out. I got an interview for a reputable tour operator, and whilst preparing for this, I received an email from my placement year job at General Motors asking if I would like to go to an assessment centre for a job that would start at the same time as the ski season. I'm now torn between something I've wanted to do for a long time and will add to my varied experience, and something that makes economical and long term career sense. At the moment I am keeping both my options open but I know Im going to have to make a decision soon! Any suggestions or personal opinions on what I should do? Thanks!

I've done a ski season and they're really fun, a great experience. However, you get appalling pay and terrible living conditions. It is a good thing to do once, just to try though. You meet some really fantastic people. It depends how much you want this other job. If you're not really bothered about it, it will come out in the assessment centre and it will be a waste of your time. There is no harm in going to the assessment centre for experience and seeing if you get the job first. Once you have a concrete offer for both, it will be easier to decide I think. I personally don't think the ski season adds much to my CV since it was bar work and cleaning but I also don't regret doing it! Good luck!
