Q&A

I've just finished an MA in English and don't know what to do. I can't find any jobs that aren't sales. Help?

I'm currently working in an administator role that is far below my abilities, just outside of London. I have an MA and a BA from the University of London and can't find a decent job anywhere. I want to work in publishing/editing. Any advice? Thanks.

I think a lot of people find this with humanities degrees. I did English Lit at uni and eventually got into online media. If you're interested in this area, perhaps you could look for a web copywriting role - you'd certainly be using your degree, and it would give you writing experience which could be useful when moving into publishing.

The University fo London have a great careers service so if you haven't already meet with a counsellor who can best advise you. Secondly, think about your transferable skills - things that coudl apply to a variety of roles. Finally, don't give up there are jobs out there and not always with the obvious larger firms but growing firms who need graduates to lead them in the future. Good luck.

I got a first back in 2009 and I am currently underemployed in NHS admin. I played with idea of doing an MA but the only benefit I could see was the increase in funds for the university coffers. I regret not studying a quantitative subject as graduates in disciplines such as maths and science are the only people coming out of university with jobs. There are just not enough jobs for graduates of arts degrees. It's tragic.
